Tree & Shrub Pruning · Snohomish & King County

Deadwood out. Clearance back. Shape kept.

Most trees do not need to come down. They need the dead limbs out, the roofline cleared, and enough taken off the crown that the next windstorm has less to push against. Done right, nobody can tell it was pruned.

In short

What does tree pruning actually do?

Pruning takes out dead, broken and crossing limbs, lifts the canopy off roofs and driveways, and thins the crown so wind passes through instead of loading the whole tree. On a healthy tree it is the cheapest thing you can do to avoid a removal later.

American Tree Care prunes trees and large shrubs across Snohomish and King County, and does tree topping where a customer wants the height taken down.

What pruning covers

Four jobs, one visit.

Most properties need two or three of these, and doing them together costs less than calling us back out for each one.

Deadwood

Take the dead limbs out

Dead wood is what comes down in wind and what lands on cars and roofs. It is also the easiest thing to remove and the cheapest visit we do.

Clearance

Get it off the structure

Limbs on the roof, over the driveway, into the gutters, or rubbing the siding. Clearance pruning buys the roof years.

Thinning

Let the wind through

Selective crown thinning drops the sail area so a storm has less to push on, without leaving the tree looking hacked at.

Topping

Bring the height down

Where a customer wants the height reduced, we top. We will also tell you honestly when thinning would serve you better.

The honest version

Half the trees we look at do not need to come down.

People call about removing a tree and leave with a pruning quote instead, because the problem was three dead limbs over the driveway rather than the tree itself. We will tell you that even though it is the smaller job, which is most of why people call us back years later.

How a pruning visit runs

In and out, usually the same day.

01

Walk and agree

We go around the property with you and agree what comes off before anyone puts a saw in a tree.

02

Climb, do not spike

A tree that is staying gets climbed on rope, not spiked. Spikes wound a tree you intend to keep.

03

Cut to the collar

Clean cuts at the branch collar so the wounds close properly, rather than stubs that rot back into the trunk.

04

Finish the site

Brush chipped, chips blown off the hard surfaces, to the level of cleanup we agreed on at the estimate.

They care about your existing lawn, plants, and fencing as they down trees safely. They put plywood shields around everything that needs safekeeping, load the wood to haul away and even blow off patios, plus rake and remove all debris.

Straight answers

Pruning questions, answered.

When is the best time to prune?
In this climate most pruning runs year round. Deadwood and clearance work can be done any time. If a tree flowers or fruits and the timing matters to you, tell us and we will work around it.
Do you top trees?
We do, and it is on the truck. We will also tell you honestly when limbing up and thinning gives you a better long-term tree for the same money. It is your property and your call, and we will do the work either way.
How much should I take off a tree at once?
Less than most people expect. Strip too much live crown in one go and the tree responds with a mess of weak regrowth that costs you more later. We stage heavy reductions over more than one visit when that is the right answer.
Can you prune limbs hanging over my roof?
That is one of the most common calls we get. Limbs over a roof drop needles into the gutters, hold moisture against the shingles, and are the first thing to come down in wind. Clearance pruning is quick and it is cheap next to a roof.
Will pruning fix a leaning tree?
Not usually. A lean is about the roots, not the crown, and taking weight off the top does not put a lifted root plate back. If a tree is leaning we will look at the base before we quote anything.
Do I pay anything up front?
No. There is no money down. You pay when the pruning is done and you are happy with how the tree looks.
Do you do shrubs and hedges too?
Large shrubs and overgrown hedges, yes, particularly when they have gone well past what a landscaper handles. Routine hedge trimming is not our line of work and we will say so.
