Stump grinder taking a large stump down below ground level
Stump Grinding · Snohomish & King County

Ground out below grade, not shaved off.

A stump ground level with the lawn is still a stump. We take it down below grade so the hole can be filled and the spot planted, sodded, or just mowed straight over like nothing was ever there.

Cheapest while we are already there. Grinding the stump on the same visit as the removal costs less than bringing the machine back out for it.
In short

What does stump grinding involve?

A grinder cuts the stump and the main root flare into chips, working below ground level rather than just cutting it flush. What is left is a hole full of grindings that can be filled with soil and planted, sodded, or mowed over.

American Tree Care runs its own grinders across Snohomish and King County, so stump work is not subcontracted out to somebody else's schedule.

Why bother grinding it

A stump left in the ground is not finished.

People leave stumps to save a few hundred dollars and call us about them a year later for one of these reasons.

It regrows

Suckers keep coming back

Alder, maple and cherry throw shoots off the stump and the roots for years. Mowing them off does not stop it.

It rots

It brings in what eats it

A decaying stump is food. Carpenter ants and beetles move into it, and a stump near the house is a bad place for that to happen.

It is in the way

You cannot use the space

No mowing over it, no planting through it, no fence post, no patio, no shed. The footprint stays dead until it is gone.

It trips people

It disappears into the lawn

Grass grows up around a cut stump until nobody can see it, which is exactly when somebody catches a foot on it.

The part people get wrong

Book it with the removal, not after it.

Grinding costs less when the equipment is already on the property and the access is already open. Deciding a year later means paying for the trip, the machine, and getting the grinder back through a gate that now has a fence and a flower bed in front of it.

How grinding runs

Usually an hour, sometimes less.

01

Locate what is buried

Irrigation, gas, invisible fence, septic and sprinkler lines. We find them before the wheel goes in, not after.

02

Get the machine in

We size the grinder to the access. Narrow machines fit through a standard garden gate for backyard stumps.

03

Grind below grade

The stump and the main root flare, taken down past ground level so the spot can be filled and used.

04

Decide on the chips

Grindings backfill the hole, or come away with us. That is set at the estimate, priced to your budget.

They cut down 3 huge trees in my backyard, including stump grinding, and I swear my yard was cleaner AFTER they left.

Straight answers

Stump questions, answered.

How deep do you grind a stump?
Below grade, deep enough that the spot can be filled with soil and planted, sodded, or mowed over. How far down depends on what you want to do with the space, so tell us at the estimate whether it is going to be lawn, a bed, or a fence post.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Diameter and access are what drive it. A big stump behind a locked gate on a slope is a different job from the same stump beside the driveway. It is cheapest done on the same visit as the removal, and the estimate is free either way.
What happens to the wood chips?
They can backfill the hole, which is the usual choice, or they can come away with us. We set that at the estimate so the price reflects what you want.
Will grinding kill the roots left in the ground?
Grinding takes out the stump and the main flare. The finer roots stay and rot down over the following years, which is fine for lawn and planting. If you are pouring a slab or setting footings over the spot, say so, because that changes what needs to come out.
Can you get a grinder into my backyard?
Usually. We run machines that fit through a standard garden gate. If access genuinely will not allow it we will tell you at the estimate rather than turning up and discovering it.
Do I pay a deposit?
No money down. You pay once the stump is ground and you are happy with the result.
Can you grind a stump another company left?
Yes, and we get called for that a lot. It does not matter who took the tree down.
